Poisoned Red Kite
puts Muirkirk in the newsThe carcass of a young Red Kite born on the Black Isle in the spring of 2011 has been found near Muirkirk, poisoned by a banned pesticide.
The bird had a satellite transmitter fitted to its back shortly after fledging on the Black Isle this summer. But RSPB Scotland became worried in September when it remained near Muirkirk for several days.
The bird's carcass was later found close to the Muirkirk and North Lowther Hills special protection area of moorland. Subsequent Tests carried out at a government laboratory showed it had been poisoned by a banned pesticide.
RSPB Scotland investigations officer Ian Thomson said: "The poisoning of this red kite is just the latest incident of bird of prey persecution in and around the special protection area, particularly involving hen harriers and peregrines.
"The populations of hen harrier in particular are declining alarmingly in this area. Only a few years ago there were 21 pairs of hen harriers in the area - now we are down to a mere handful."

Cumnock Chronical
Campaign for Better BroadbandThe Cumnock Chronical is running a campaign to bring a better broadband service to Cumnock and it's surrounding villages.
Muirkirk first received a public phone-line based ADSL broadband service on 8th September 2004. This was upgraded to ADSL Max on 31st March 2006. There have been no further upgrades to Muirkirk's broadband service since then and the sole provider of broadband service in Muirkirk continues to be BT. The Muirkirk broadband service serves 809 residental premises and 50 non-residential premises (info as shown in SamKnows)
