A full weekend of activities
based around
John Lapraik's Muirkirk Heritage

The introduction of the World John Lapraik Speaking Competition was announced by John Haining, President of the Robert Burns Worldwide Federation, during a visit to Muirkirk Primary School on Burns Day 2008. Also present at this event were Angus Middleton, President of the Ayrshire Feberation of Burns Clubs, Councillor Jim Roberts, Billy Sharp, Vice-President of Mauchline Burns Club and Douglas McKenzie of the New Cumnock Burns Club. Muirkirk Primary School was asked to pilot the Young Peoples Speaking Competition for this event.

The 2010 Weekend Schedule

    • Friday 4th June
      Crambo-jingle and Sang - an evening of Poetry and Song
      in St Thomas's Hall, Muirkirk
      from 7.30pm 'til late
       
    • Saturday 5th June morning
      Young People's Competition
      in the IFE Wing, Muirkirk
      from 10am to 12.30pm
      followed by Young People's Buffet Lunch and Prizegiving
    • Saturday 6th June at 1pm
      The John Lapraik Memorial Reading
      in the Parish Kirkyard, Muirkirk
    • World John Lapraik Speaking Competition (for adults)
      Coach House Hotel 2pm to 6pm
      followed by "Haggis and Neeps" and prizegiving
    • Children's Ceilidh
      5pm to 7pm
    • Community Ceilidh
      in the Caravan Park
      from 8pm to 12.30am

    • Sunday 6th June
      Poetry Themed Church Service
    • The Poets' and Covenanters Trail
      starts 2pm
